It All Starts with Gratitude

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”

Being grateful and staying with our plans despite repeated setbacks tends to build inner character, just as it draws maturity on our faces.

Life is a delicate dance of internal alignment and external circumstances. And some of this dance is in our control and some of it isn’t. But what I know is that the dance goes much smoother if we choose to go right into the middle of our life and send love and healing to our energy field around us.

But how do we embrace and expand the most fulfilling experience of love?

We begin by going within and uniting with the unconditional generous love the universe has for each of us. Feel the flow of that love by remembering the moments that left you breathless or melted your heart. The first moment that you held your newborn, the moment you experienced the vast majesty of the sky or mountains or ocean waves or for me that one moment I first stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon.

That love is ours to share and when we do, joy multiplies beyond our imagination. We all can flow towards a new experience of giving, receiving and connecting.

To experience love fully means experiencing who you are fully. Nothing is more natural. Love can have different intensities.  Love is holistic. The only reason we do not experience love everywhere is because we are not used to living at the level of the true self.  One you realize this you can start to live love rather than looking for love.

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the values within yourself that you have built against it.”~Drumi

The energy in the heart can remove obstacles easily.  There is no need to chip away at the walls. By putting attention on the heart you encourage the flow of life energy that can heal negative feelings which is the symptoms of lack of love.

To keep the flow of love, take the time to put the focus on the different levels of love available.  When you notice then, the simple action of putting your attention  helps to make it an intimate part of you.

The flavours of love include: Appreciation, gratitude, enjoyment, affection, romance and personal attraction. If you appreciate something, like a sunrise, take the moment to say to yourself: this is love. These are no small things, love is gentle by nature and many experiences are infused with love even though we get into the habit of making love a big strong emotion.  It can be that as well, but feeling gratitude for a kind word is just as powerful as romance. As you begin to notice love your awareness will expand naturally and then it becomes easier to make those gestures of kindness and compassion which are expressions of your true self. You then develop the awareness of the universal love that embodies all of creation.

Love really is the most powerful force in the world. When we express ourselves from a centered place of love – miracles happen. Think about the love you feel for your partner, your child, your family.  What if that love that you feel at this moment could be the predominate energy that rules the world? Well, it does.

Your deep personal spark of love is the same magnificent love that powers the universe. Imagine then what happens when we expand our energy from feeling love to being love. When we express the love first for ourselves and then  universal love that flows through us, we begin to transform and by doing so transform the world in the most wonderful and wondrous ways.

Most people use the energy of love very sparingly limiting their love to a small circle of family and friends.  The thought of universal love, or god’s love, seems far away or super human yet the tiniest spark of love we feel comes to life within our true selves as an impulse of universal love. As this loves flows outward, we make a choice to localize our love and limit who receives it, or to give it freely. Until we activate the flow, many of us with limit how we express love.  When your awareness expands, love flows naturally.  It doesn’t have a reason to be limited or penned in. Any time you  feel a positive emotion, understand that that is love radiating from your true self.

You will attract people into your life depending on the truth you find close to your heart. Our beliefs draw us to individuals along this road trip of life. When you find that right person or that right group you will find you can amplify your feelings of love, self-worth, inner security and spiritual fulfillment.

If it is a good fit you will gain comfort, inspiration, hope, support and love on your journey and in turn you will offer those same gifts back. When you find that person whom you can share your ideas, hopes, fears, laughter, affection, tears and triumphs you have found more than friendship or companionship – you have found a larger version of your own spiritual self in that individual.

To love is, by definition, is interdependent. “Love isn’t love till you give it away” It involves relationships with others and belonging, and it is based on one of the major themes of all wisdom literature – reciprocity, or the Golden Rule.

To learn is to grow, to feel ourselves expanding. How often does learning come as we read books written by others, attend seminars given by others, sit in classes taught by others? How many times do we get insights as we interact in group situations with other people? How many of our “own” ideas grow out of the ideas of others?

To leave a legacy is also, by definition, interdependent. It is contributing to society, contributing in meaningful ways to the lives of others. The world we live in is the legacy of those who have gone before us. The choices we make in it create legacy for those who will follow.

The fact is that we are better together than we are alone. Humility comes as we realize that “no man is an island,” that no one individual has all the talents, all the ideas, all the capacity to perform the functions of the whole. Vital to quality of life is the ability to work together, learn from each other, and help each other grow.
